this is a day in my life.

i've written about one million posts about why people should blog. a million. count them. ok, fine...it's like 3 posts. whatevs.  but for those of you who are new around here, let me boss you around for just un momento.

blogging can get weird sometimes. people blog for their business, a cause, or just for their family. some do all three in a blog. which is why it's weird...there's no rules for blogging. no blogging etiquette. no guidelines. just post whatever you want on the interweb.

some are moms like me. some are guys that are like, why are there only like 4 guys that blog? some are single ladies getting their awesome on by getting lots of sleep and doing whatever they want all the live-long day, while constantly reapplying lip-gloss. haha. man, those were the days. why did i even write that...some of you shall be offended.

anyshways... let me bring you back to the basics of blogging(if you are blogging to tell your story)

we do not blog for comments.
we do not blog to be something we are not.
we do not blog for popularity.

we blog to tell our story. we are the memory keepers.
if you don't write your story down, who will? no one, and it will get lost. that's just not ok.
Photobucket
so ya,  you turn these blogs into books. BAM. your life published every year. what a gift to your children....all their memories bound in a book. the good and the hard. there it is. wishin' your mom was a scrapbooker back in the day, huh? ya me too.

so when i posted this for another guest blog, i knew i needed to also put it on my blog for that reason. every christmas, i make a book of our life. and this is a day in the life of us. right now. if you've already read this...look away. look away.

5am: penelope wakes up to eat. but then goes back to sleep. and i get up and do a 1 hour devotional and a 1 hour hot yoga class before all the kids wake up. JUST KIDDING. i go ahead and go right back to sleep too, don't you worry. Photobucket

7:30 we wake up...LATE. awesome. layne has to leave the house at 8 to be at school. so layne gets dressed, i make his lunch and he runs out the door with daddy. because daddy doesn't have a surgery this morning. thank goodness. and thanks layne for feeding the dog.
oh, i put those cold packs for lunch boxes on my eyes to make me not look so tired. what? i don't know...but i think it works. google it?

Photobucket

lila wakes up around 8:30-9:45. we get dressed. change diapers. i put m'face on. package up some gifts that need to be mailed out, because i'm an awesome friend. ok wait, these gifts won't even arrive in time for her birthday. whatevs.

PhotobucketPhotobucket

anyway, we need to get out the door on time, because we have to go to lila's mother's day out open house at 10 am. i'm a little nervous but lila is super excited...cheering in the backseat when we pull in the parking lot. why am i nervous? lila does not talk(we discovered she couldn't hear 6 months ago, but now, thanks to tubes, she can)...she is not potty triained(how do i potty train someone who can't talk?)...will she fit in? that's what i'm thinking. ball of insecurities.Photobucket

10 am, lila rocks it at the open house. she doesn't hit anyone. but if they tried to take that stroller away from her, she totally would have. hooray! and we make friends. this is going to be great, i tell myself. it's only one day a week...quit stressing. she needs this. normally at this time, lila would have speech therapy, but today is really weird. why did i decide to document today?...who knows.

11:00 we leave and we're off to run some errands. paper source for lila's birthday invitation envelopes...surprise, we're celebrating your birthday a month later because september is freaking nutty-mcNutterson, lila. bad mom? maybe. smart mom...yes. thank you.

Photobucket

11:15 hello panera...forgot to take a pic of this shenanigan. but don't worry, lila stood up on the booth and said HI! to every passersby. penelope slept. thank you, Lord.
11:45 i hop into forever 21 for a birthday gift for one of my besties. success! they have the cutest and cheapest jewelry there.
12:30 hit up the post office to mail little gifties out. when we get home, we play a little and then it's nappy time at 1:30. which just means, lila messes her room up and doesn't sleep. but penelope does, so i snooze off for 20 minutes on the couch. and then penelope wakes up from her very short nap and wants to eat. how rude. after eating, we stare at eachother. penelope thinks i'm funny and i think she's cute, so this goes on for quite a while. until i realize...

Photobucket

i have another child. in naptime.

3:00 lila gets up from solitary confinement. i mean rest time. at this point i'm about to go pick up layne but i remember he has a playdate after school with his buddy. this makes me a little sad because i miss him. so anyway, until like 4:30, i basically chase lila around and tell her 1800 times to take her fingers out of the mouth.  suggestions for how to get this sweet nugget to stop? i have no clue.

Photobucket

at some point in there then i'm all, hey wait, what are we eating tonight? i made my world famous sloppy joes(NOT). which is a pound of ground beef and a half a bottle of bbq sauce. generally we eat healthier than that, but i was like...hmmm, what can i do with a pound of ground beef in about 5 minutes. ha. so it worked out for my non-planning self that day.

at around 5-ish, we eat. because we are old people. like the old people you see at the buffet at 4:30 that are already done with dinner and are ready for bed. that's us. also we have grey hair. so that indeed makes us "of a certain age".

Photobucket

you can tell from these photos who is the good eater and who hates anything i make. why do we have to fight about this every night, layne? oh my word.

so after dinner we play. penelope lays the smack down on the older ones with the help of daddy. we call her "ninja baby".

Photobucket

then it's off to bath time at 6:30

Photobucket

and after bath...a little cuddle time with penelope. because who can resist?

Photobucket

story time, and in bed by 7:30 Photobucket

i head out to go to michaels because i have to buy 30 wreath forms for a craft night next week. and nato hangs with some of his buddies while i'm gone because he is a social butterfly and loves people around CONSTANTLY. he could live in a commune.

i come home and shower. i shower at night because in the morning, i can't escape the childrens. it just works for me...don't judge. and then at around 11, we go to bed. here is an awkward picture to prove it. nato and i talk in bed until 11:30. then we make out. just kidding. i fell asleep.

Photobucket

'twas a super busy day. thanks for joining us. let's take it easy tomorrow and do absolutely nothing.

now go write your story down.

because i'm single and have the time to reapply. obviously.

    very much not offended.

except, not a lot of sleep last night. 4am wake up due to jet lag...whoops.

  4. So not really sure how you do so much in the mornings, I am super lazy compared to you, haha. Takes me a couple hours to wake, then I dream of Caleb's nap time so I can nap. You are a crazy lady!! Love seeing a day in your life, what a good momma!!

  5. why was the making out part the most hysterical for me? i have thought about doing this a few times, but some days we're boring and don't do much. maybe i could inspire other boring/stay at homer's to be more awesomely boring, too?? yes. yes i will.

I so need to do more everyday posts.
P.S. I live in Texas now, but grew up in St. Joe. Oh how I miss Missouri :(

  11. Love this - so fun. :) We eat at 5pm too cause Jett starts screaming "EAT!" at 4:59 and I'm thinking "I'm freaking starving" cause I'm growing a human. I also shower at night - who the heck has time in the morning? Not me, I'm lazy and prefer to stay in bed as long as possible. Love the photos of everyday - I should try this sometime...maybe.

  13. I love "a day in the life..."! Thanks for taking us along and reminding me why I blog. Sometimes I really just like the comments...

  14. Thanks for this timely reminder. I don't have kiddos yet but my blog is about my story...not anything else. It's a journal of things that I do, lessons I've learned, and things I care enough about to share.

You make me laugh and think deeply all within the same window.
    Thanks.

  15. Yes! I am the memory keeper, the photo taker, the story teller, and yet there is no time to do these things! I have THOUSANDS of pictures on my (crappy old) laptop that I upload and never find time to go through let alone blog. I work three 12 hour days a week and with two kids I ask you (as a mom of three) WHEN do you find the time? I find myself at 11pm when everyone has stopped needing me that the last thing I want to battle with is my (crappy old) laptop. I want to get back to blogging, even if all the readers have jumped ship because like you say, we do not blog for anyone else! My poor poor blog, he is sad :P

  16. audrey, you should know that this is what i look like in the morning. it's indeed shocking.

  17. love the 'day to day' pictures of 'normal life'. not just the posed ones a few times a year. good reminder of the reason to blog...thanks!

  18. Sloppy joes are the bomb, yo.

But I make mine with about a pound of brown sugar, ketchup and mustard. Culinary genius I am. And, really ridiculously unhealthy but good.

  19. Yes memories are the best reason for blogging! Looking back my absolute fav posts of ALL time are the ones about our little everyday things. I first got the idea for getting our blog printed into books from your blog, THANK YOU!!

  20. Doing it and telling you when I do. So there.
I'd do it now (because I'm diligent like that), but I need to shower before I turn into a zombie who cannot function [insert night-showerers fist bump here].

  21. I say "Anyshways" now because of you. FYI.

  22. after reading that I need to go to bed :)

the reality is - my days aren't much different....especially today that involved 3 round trips to my daughter's school which is 30 minutes (one way) away..yep...three hours in the car today

    ReplyDelete
  23. you are so great.
i wish you did this everyday so i could laugh at you everyday :)
my oldest hates everything i cook too.
    all but mac and cheese.
what do ya think would happen if that is all he ate for like a month?

  24. Thought I should "introduce" myself. I really enjoy your blog -found you through a college classmate Jana when I was bored one day during my planning time. I have a blog and am doing an "Everyday for a year" challenge - so far my students and daughter are sucking all my time so I am lurking at 11:58 pm after grading 14million stacks of FACS tests. Anywhoo - I like your stuff. You should write a book.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Semi correction - maybe it wasn't Jana - maybe it was a link from another blog. Reguardless I am glad I found your blog.

    ReplyDelete
  26. love this. it's so easy to begin writing for your readers/commenters rather than your family. does that make sense? thanks for keeping it real jami, as always.

  27. sounds like my morning with the waking up late. ugh. i am not a morning person at all. i will need to try the ice packs because um....i need something in the morning.

p.s. i found a whole new little colony of gray hair the other day that have been hanging out for who knows how long.

  28. I'm a memory keeper (aka MOM) too! I love to blog...well because it's just easier than gluing paper and sticking stickers to paper! Ya know? And I wish my mom would have done something like this too. I hope some day my kids appreciate it.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Love it! Thanks for sharing. It's nice to know how normal you are! :)

  30. jeff and nato should start a commune together. because jeff could literally live with 8,000 people in our house at all times. :) and you and i could sit in solitary confinement crafting things.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I love posts like these! It makes me feel like 'crazy' is normal because I'm right there with ya! I've been dying to transfer my blog to book for a long time but I never know which company to use! Help!

    ReplyDelete
  32. I found you through Emily's blog and I just love reading your posts. You remind me that our crazy little hectic life is pretty normal. :) And thanks for reminding us of the importance of blogging. I don't scrapbook, so this is all my kids will have to look back on, and the little moments really are important.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I really love this post. I really value the thought of being a memory maker, and a memory keeper, for my littles.

    ReplyDelete
  34. That whole part about your blog being a place for documenting memories? Yes. Totally. And that photo of daddy and babes in the bath? It needs to be up in a frame. So beautiful.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Mmm. Love this...life is wonderful and memorable! Blog on, gorgeous! xoxo

  36. You can get really gross tasting nail varnish that's meant to stop you biting your nails (it does, it's gross) that my mom used to use for me and my sister. That should keep Lila's fingers out of her mouth!

    ReplyDelete
  37. loved this post. thanks for it. :)

  38. Awesome! Sounds pretty much like my day minus 1 kid. I am out of the baby stage. :) Love your humor and honesty.

  39. I think it's so cool that you are making books of your blog for your kiddos. they're gonna LOVE it later on!

  40. I love this post. Your blog inspired me to start a blog of my own, mostly because yours was one of the first that I came across that was real. I don't want to blog for anyone but me, and although I am new to it, I love thinking about the little tidbits that I want to record for ME (and the fam of course). Thanks for being you, and thanks for being real. xoxo

  41. Last night we were about to change our ceiling fan out because it is only halfway working and literally feels like it will fall out of the ceiling at any moment. Anyways, I grab my camera and lay down on the bed flat to take a picture of the ceiling fan...my husband looks at me and says, "This is why I love you, because you want to document our lives!" Yes, taking a picture of a ceiling fan makes my husband love me more. It's great, right? lol! It's funny because I honestly have to remind myself of your 3 what we are NOTs. I started my craft blog which you commented on once (how i found you and secretly fell in love with your fam & story) and sometimes I get so bogged down because it feels like some people are just oh. so. cool out there in the massive blog land and then there is myself that doesn't just have the freaking time OR energy to make it something people rely on daily! Ha! No, really, God just reminds me that he made me to create and that my blog is for helping other people to know Jesus better. that's it. If people comment, then great. If they love my "whatevs" then great. Thanks for the reminder that being cool is for middle schoolers and creepy bloggers! HA!

  43. 3 and not potty trained. PSSHHH...who cares. I will tell you a secret: first son potty trained at 6. 6. he has major food allergies and issues and it was horrible. We were young, he was our first. we read everythinga nd did everything right we were so so consistent. He did it when he was ready. Next son potty trained at 4-5. Daughter potty trained at 4. I gave her tons of chocolate. Turns out she is lactose intolerant and it gave her diarrhea...maybe my fault? 3rd son just potty trained right before his 5th birthday. 4th son is now 3 and I ahvent started yet. havent started the crying and praying and excuse making. Man I hate potty training.

Now that you really question my parenting abilities: My daughter sucks on the same two fingers, backwards like Lila. She's 11. She wont stop. I tried all the cute things. and crying and screaminga nd threatening...Parenting is so hard:)

  44. Don't hate on the single ladies....trust me I'd rather not be single and able to get all the sleep I want...I'm going to tell my single story too, whether or not it matters!

  45. I just found your blog and can't stop smiling as I read. As I was reading this post the nosey side of me came out & thought "hmmm, I wonder if she lives in KC. I could totally picture myself making my way from the paper source, to panera, then to forever 21." Then I look over and see your deals in KC blog & assume that you do live there. All that to say, I grew up there and miss it terribly. Your family is absolutely lovely & I'm happy to be a new follower of your blog.

  46. i am only able to shower at night also...which i was suppose to do TWO HOURS AGO. i can't stop reading your blog damnit
